15+ Budget Friendly Yarns

I am based in the US so pricing will be in US dollars and it is 2023, so as time goes on these prices may fluctuate.

The yarns I am sharing with you I have used before and I will share my personal thoughts and what I’ve knit with the yarn. I will list the fiber content, weight, grams, yardage, average price, and where you can purchase. THis is not an exhaustive list, so there may be more info on the yarn available online and other places that you can purchase from. Also Note that prices will vary on different sites, sales may or may not happen, prices fluctuate over time, and colors will come and go.

The price of each yarn is relative to the type of fiber. A budget friendly alpaca yarn will still always be more than a budget friendly cotton yarn. Also be aware that the phrase “budget friendly” is also a relative term and will mean different price points to different people and their incomes. I am trying to keep the cost of the yarns I show you under 12.00 for 100g. For the most part the yarns I show you will definitely stay under (or a lot under) that amount. I just thought having an expected cap was a good idea! I completely understand that even 12.00 for a 100g of yarn may still be a bit much for some people to spend. I even cringe at spending that much on yarn! Lol No, I am not kidding! I am cheap!

I will be sharing acrylic, cotton, wool, alpaca, and blend yarns. Yarns will fit into a specific category as long as they are 70% or more of the one fiber. Ex. 75% wool 25% Nylon goes into the wool category, a 90% cotton 10% acrylic would go into the cotton category. Now if it is less than 70% it will go into the Blend category. Ex. if it is a 60% wool 40% acrylic it will go into blends. Make sense?! Great! Now, there are other fibers out there, bamboo, linen, etc, but I am including the ones that I know more about. I feel like I shouldn’t talk about a bunch of yarns/fibers that I have not worked with.

Some yarns are more readily available in Europe and other places than here, especially when talking about animal fibers. They knit more and knit more with natural yarns. I will include (to the best of my ability) shops that carry the same brands/fibers within the US as well as the most budget friendly options that we manufacture in the US (though the pickings are slim!). A lot of our animal fiber companies are a bit more commercialized and flashy and have a price tag to match (not looking at WAK and WATG, and a tiny bit PurlSoho). Not saying it is bad they charge what they do! They have assigned a value to their product and it sells, so who are we to say they should charge less! They are running businesses. I’m Just saying we don’t have as many budget friendly natural fiber options here in the US…..

Knit with the fiber you like and that fits into your budget. Don’t feel the need to stretch yourself thin to buy that fancy yarn everyone else is knitting with. You do not need to spend 20, 40 dollars on yarn to knit or crochet beautiful accessories (Hats/gloves/etc.), or spend 50, 100, 200 + dollars on yarn to make a beautiful garment. Never feel ashamed for knitting with budget friendly yarns. You can make beautiful things out of budget friendly yarns.

If creating brings you joy but you are on a budget, NEVER FEAR! There are fibers out there for you!
