Dusting your Houseplants

Okay, let’s talk about dusting your plants. I feel like that is one of those care tips that often gets missed, forgotten about, and just never mentioned. Not sure why either! It is so easy and helps keep your plants nice and happy.

Your plant gathers light, photosynthesis, to create food/energy for itself. When your plant is covered in dust it cannot properly get the light it needs to thrive. So what should you do? Dust them! You can do that several different ways.

You can place your houseplant in the shower and gently spray their leaves off, watering them at the same time. Some plants have more delicate leaves and do not like this, so you may not be able to do that to all of your plants.

My favorite method is just gently wiping them off with a soft, damp, cloth. I do this every other week or as needed. Not only is this good for your plants to get free of dust but for you to be familiar with your plants. As you are wiping their leaves you become familiar with their health and make it easier to notice when something is wrong. It also helps keep pests, like spider mites, clear from their leaves. Oh, and don’t forget to wipe the undersides of the leaves as dirt splashes up on them from watering and that is often where the pests live.

So! The next time you water your houseplants make sure to also clear them of any dust, they will thank you for it!
